Sweeping across the nation is a whole new trend concerning the first meal of the day: breakfast bowls. And I’ve got to say, I’ve jumped totally on board. I used to dread figuring out what to make for breakfast; I’ve never been the typical toast & peanut butter or cereal person, and I’ve always preferred savoury over sweet foods for breakfast. But cooking up a luxurious omelet every morning just isn’t going to happen. So when I heard about this revolutionary idea where you just throw stuff together in a bowl, I thought I could definitely get on board. It sounds a bit silly because it is so not a novel concept, but somehow, it’s not the way most of us (myself included) see breakfast.
After getting in the breakfast bowl routine, where I would throw together something from each food group, admire it’s beauty all placed together in a bowl, and then gobble it down, I started using the same sort of ingredients I could put in a bowl, and just layering them on toast. It fancyfies the bowl and little and you don’t need to go through the added step of cutting up the toast into bite sized pieces to toss into the bowl.
Some of favourite combinations in my preliminary research on breakfast bowls & breads…
- Toast smothered in goat cheese and chickpeas, layered with zucchini and coriander sprouts.
- A plain greek yogurt bowl topped with soft & sweet medjool dates, crunchy roasted almonds, and a perfectly ripe banana.
- Orange halves sprinkled with nutty, roasted sunflower seeds.
- Toast spread with hummus, layered with zucchini, crumbled goat cheese, and fresh sprouts.
…and all put together in under five minutes, with no need to turn on the stove or dirty a frying pan, spatula, or mixing bowl. What better way to start the day?
