It’s going to be a busy weekend with so many events in the capital this weekend. Here’s some things you can check out:
1) Mac My Cheese Festival
Head to City Hall now until October 2nd for Mac My Cheese Festival. It features plenty of vendors trying their unique take of this comfort food. Ever try mac n cheese pizza or mac n cheese sandwiches? There will be plenty of delicious creations to try. There will also be live music and a beer garden. Best part, admission is FREE.
2) Whisky Ottawa
On Saturday night join whiskey enthusiasts at the Canadian War Museum for the 3rd edition of Whiskey Ottawa. It’s a great event that allows you to sample many different whiskies from all over the world under one roof. It’s a great opportunity to venture out and try new whiskies and see what you like. Your ticket includes your whiskey samples, many cocktails and light snacks. There will be over $10,000 worth of whiskies to sample from.
3) Head to Gatineau Park for Fall Rhapsody
Walk through the trails and see all the beautiful colours of the leaves in Gatineau Park. Enjoy the great outdoors and take in some stunning views. To celebrate the display of colours, Fall Rhapsody will host some special free events such as learning why leaves change colour in the fall, view work of local artisans, taste farm-fresh products and more. For a schedule visit their official website.
4) Ottawa Fury Game
Head to TD Place on Sunday to watch them take on Puerto Rico FC. The game starts 2:00 pm so head to Lansdowne early for brunch and then head over and cheer on the team! You’ll love the in-game atmosphere!
5) Saunders Farm
Saunders Farm is now open for the season. Head there after dark for Fright Night. This includes their ever-popular haunted hayrides, Barn of Terror, mazes, live performances and parades. Beware as creepy creatures pop out at you from all directions.
6) Oktoberfest Ottawa
Head to Clarke Fields Park in Barrhaven on September 30th or October 1st to join in some Oktoberfest festivities. There will be 7 craft brewers on site to take care of your beer and cider needs. Enjoy Bavarian Oktoberfest food while listening to local artists. There will also be games and contests you can take part in.
7) Apple & Pumpkin Picking
Head to a local farm in Ottawa for some apple and pumpkin picking. Pick the best and then try making some goodies at home like apple pie, applesauce, apple jam, pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup and more! The possibilities are endless. There are plenty of farms to choose from. Last year I checked out Log Cabin Orchard. They’re open 9am-6pm. While you’re there try some food from their apple wood fired bbq. They also have a great selection of jams, jellies, cider and baked goods on site.
8) Omega Park
It’s open all year round but now is a perfect time to head to Omega Park because not only do you get to see all the animals but many of the leaves are starting to change as well. Make sure to bring some carrots or apples to feed the animals. Everything from deer, caribou, pigs, goats, bison and more will come up to your car to say hi. You’ll also see bears, wolves, moose, and foxes but they’re behind a fence. Stop at Station 11 where you can get out and pet the animals. You’ll meet some friendly deer that are more than happy to pose for a photo if you give them a carrot or apple in return. Here’s a shot of the bison. You’re not allowed to feed them but they’ll still come over and say hi. It’s pretty terrifying to see them up so close but they’re nice and calm. My advice is to not put your window down all the way because they will stick their whole head in.
