Well, there is a solution to this, I am going to introduce an emerging term called “Synthetic Biology”. The definition of this term depends on the perspective of the reader. It is an interdisciplinary field which combines engineering and biology.

Synthetic biology is the engineering of biology: the synthesis of complex, biologically based (or inspired) systems which display functions that do not exist in nature. This engineering perspective may be applied at all levels of the hierarchy of biological structures – from individual molecules to whole cells, tissues and organisms. In essence, synthetic biology will enable the design of ‘biological systems’ in a rational and systematic way.

Another definition can be – “Incorporating the knowledge of biology to build devices or programs that can be used for human benefit.” This field combines biotechnology, nanotechnology, molecular biology, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, genetic engineering and biophysics. Being multidisciplinary, makes it an emerging field in the industry and a promising candidate for research.

For those of you who are wondering what would you do with the knowledge of biology in an era of industrial development, this field can very well give you a direction towards future prospects. Pharmaceutical Industry, Enzyme Production, Biomedical industry are the major participants that promote the idea of synthetic biology and are searching for young scientists who can be creative, and enthusiastic in developing products which uses the knowledge of both engineering and biology. In this era, the preference is being given not to individual subjects but to an asset of several subjects which are interconnected. It is the face of future and technological advances.
